29 Oct 2021Haywards Heath to Crawley via Cuckfield 29/10/2021 Leg Two CRACUC
I walked this on a blustery day at the end of October. This is a strenuous walk with a touch of Indiana Jones-style adventure in a couple of places. It is within the High Weald AONB for most of the way, with some great views and a high satisfaction rating.
The route starts off from behind the exclusive Ockenden Manor hotel and skirts the western fringes of Cuckfield, through woods and small fields to reach Whitemans Green. From here it drops down into the Sussex Ouse Valley through a golf course. It is always a surprise when you cross the River Ouse to think that such a wide valley has been carved out by such a small river.
Climbing up the other side of the valley, after a couple of miles you reach Balcombe village at the half way point. There is a pub, The Half Moon which does good pub lunches and a small village store next door. Heading out of Balcombe again, the route descends into another valley and around the end of a small lake over a boardwalk. After several rainy days, the boards were submerged in places but still passable with care. Boots are probably essential for this walk.
Crawley Lane heads towards Cowdray Forest. It is about a mile long with no verge or pavement, however I have always found it very quiet with very few cars. I was only passed by one vehicle in 20 minutes this time. From the end of the lane the route heads up a drive past “Greentrees” and into Cowdray Forest. The woods are lovely and quiet and full of bluebells in the spring.
Over the railway, the chosen route through Tilgate Forest is a little circuitous, but has the advantage of crossing the M23 via a bridge which puts you in the nicest part of Tilgate Park. This is the section with lots of beautiful ornamental trees. All facilities are available in Tilgate Park should they be required.
From here on the route into Crawley passes through Tilgate and the Southgate conservation area, both quiet and residential, to reach the town centre.
This is a walk which pays back the effort, revealing typical High Weald scenery; woodland, small fields, steep valleys and plenty of mud when it is wet. Expect all the usual rural footpath obstacles; stiles, narrow footbridges, boardwalks, kissing gates, horses, cows and a high stepped bridge over the railway just before Balcombe. The route is well plotted and well signed on the ground.
