Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

07 Sep 2021Old railway line, compacted tarmac route. Used by the whole community for walking and cycling between Cowes, Newport and the villages between (Northwood, Medham).
Not much up and down. Fine for wheelchairs. Some reflectors in dark patches if you're riding a bike in the gloom.
Often used by people commuting between Newport, St Mary's Hospital and Cowes.
Connects to the "Red Squirrel" Route from Newport to Sandown via Merstone, Arreton and Langbridge.
Walk is alongside the Medina River. Mainly between trees. Passes across SSSI and waterbird habitats. There's the possibility that you might see a red squirrel if you're lucky.

23 Apr 2021This gentle stroll along the old railway track is a delightful way to get to Newport from Cowes. It's popular with cyclists, so watch out for the bikes - often going at speed! And you'll also see lots of dog-walkers, joggers and parents with pushchairs traversing the path, as it's flat and scenic. You are surrounded by woodland and birdsong, and as the path runs parallel to the Medina River, you'll spot the water - and yachts moored along it - at various breaks in the trees. At low tide, there's also the option to walk along the river bank at certain spots. All in all, it's a delightful walk - you might even see some red squirrels, after whole the path is named.
