Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

24 Apr 2024I did this route from East Cowes to West Cowes, and found it very easy to navigate. The Chain Ferry was operational, so I didn't experience alternate transportation crossing the water between the two sides of town.
The Chain Ferry is worth the whole trip. It's a very different mode of transport, and (in good weather) is a fun ride. The ferry takes people, dogs, bikes and a few cars on the less-than-5-minute journey. The fare is £1 (single person).
The walk along Medina Road, Birmingham Road, and High Street is very pleasant, with shops, restaurants, and pubs lining most of the way. It passes the Red Jet Ferry Terminal with frequent sailings to Southampton.
Continuing on High Street leads past the Royal Yacht Squadron, with lovely views of the Solent, and on to the Esplanade.

23 Apr 2021To reach East Cowes from West, you can walk through the town, along Birmingham Road and into Medina Road - at the end of which, you can catch the chain ferry (Floating Bridge 6) to East Cowes. If FB6 is not in service, there will be passenger-only boat to take you across the river. From East Cowes, it's a few minutes through town to reach the Red Funnel ferry terminal. Or carry on to reach the seafront in East Cowes, which has a pretty beach at low tide and a children's playwark.

01 May 2021.... the more I look at this route, the more I regret my first feedback!
I *like* the ranges as a route, and if open, I'd like have the option to be routed across them; but there should some way to make a route secondary, to indicate that a route might not always be available. -
