Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Lots of lovely bits but potentially too many cows for some. My partner is not keen on cows so we took some detours which I will upload as the non-cow version.

N.B. If planning to come by train, Cowden station is 30 minute walk on busy roads or 45 minute walk on footpaths to Cowden village itself.

We walked in mid-July at 25c, definitely peak cow season :)

Cowden is beautiful chocolate box village and a lovely place to start.

The route takes you down through the allotments and onto the golf course where the footpath signs vanish and the slow ways route is some distance from actual footpaths. I would follow my alternative route to find the way through.

After that, it’s pretty straight forward, all the way to picturesque Hartfield with a lovely pub and handy village shop (for welcome ice cream on a hot day!)

At Withyham, the route suggests a lengthy bit of walking on a very busy road up to the Dorset arms (another lovely pub) and then through the Buckhurst estate (which rears cattle for meat). We took a detour on a country lane and footpaths which took us around the cow fields.

The long climb up to Crowborough (the highest point in East Sussex) was lovely and forested, but I expect would get very muddy during wetter weather.

Crowborough is a medium-sized town, so the end of the walk was a lengthy climb through residential streets, but with some lovely views between houses.
