31 Oct 2022 Autumn

Completed this walk today which I started from Brinklow. In hindsight, I would do the walk in the other direction to save the nice bit for the end. The walk to Coombe was enjoyable, then less so from Coombe to Coventry - mainly due to the large amount of roadside walking which makes up approx. 40% of the route.

The route leaves the pretty village of Brinklow across fields towards Grange Farm. From the farm, just before Peter Hall, you cross a long strip of grass in the field (photo 6) which is apparently an operational private runway. Got to say it doesn't look very used, but it is maintained, so might be worth looking for planes coming in to land when you cross it.

From Peter Hall it's a bit of walking on the road before you get to the track to Hillfields & Walsgrave Farms. It got a bit boggy on this track, especially between the farms (photo 7), as we had had a bit of rain recently. The route then takes you into Coombe Abbey woods where I was lucky to view a muntjac, and then through the gardens and arboretum which was lovely at this time of year.

After crossing the country park and exiting via the anglers entrance, the walk is then alongside the busy Brinklow Road. Eventually the route reaches the Sowe Valley & Stoke Floods Green which is a welcome break from the road walking, but it's not long before you're back next to the traffic for the remainder of the journey into the City.

It's a relatively easy route, with a fair few gates and one stile in the Brinklow half, and a couple of flights of steps getting into Stoke Floods. You also travel past an old drinking fountain on the Binley Rd (photo 14) which is of some historic interest.

A pleasant walk out of Coventry, with a detour to follow the River Sowe for a while, before moving through Coombe Abbey Park and picking up the Coventry Way to Binklow. It even crosses an airstrip!

At the time of writing the paths were visible, although a little overgrown in a couple of fields. There is extensive work going on along Binley Road to install a cycle way, but there is still room for pedestrians.

Toilets and refreshments available in Coventry, at Coombe and in Brinklow.

Good clear walking. Urban area along wide pavement and cycle paths. Rural mainly off-road field and woodland footpaths. Only possible issue to be aware of would be the section after passing under A46 (west to east) before entering Coombe Abbey grounds, hedge possibly impinging onto the footpath could narrow the path and there is quite fast traffic (we walked in spring).
