Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

15 Mar 2023This is an almost plain sailing walk and perhaps in dry conditions it would be. There are no stiles one potential at Bingham but the farm gate could be opened when I passed by. Mostly field edge paths around arable fields so no cattle. Other paths are mown and well walked or farm tracks with a surface of sorts. The canal towpath has had a stone surface which is still adequate. The route is let down by cross field paths between Cropwell Butler and the canal these were muddy although still well walked so marking this, assuming a summer walk, it's worth 5 stars.
There are now three variations on the basic route, I walked some of the alternatives and offer here some improvements from the other plots.
I walked from Bingham. I can't see the point of following the complicated route of Cotbin-2 around the school. Either exit of Cotbin or Cotbin-3 are fine with safe crossing of Long Acre. The crossing of the by-pass could be an issue at busy times.
Cotbin-3 offers a more accurate plot to approach the first footpath where a stile will be used if the farm gates are locked. From here it's a bonded surface farm track so very easy walking. Later the field edge path is mown grass which was a little muddy in places but generally good.
Approaching Cropwell Butler the path enters Sheldon Field a well maintained community asset with wildlife and sport being the focus. I can see no benefit staying on the footpath used by Cotbin-2 it passes through muddy horse paddocks with lots of electric fencing.
Cotbin passes by the play area where there are picnic tables or at the road the John Samworth Memorial Garden with some seats marked West Bridgford Urban District Council. Cotbin also passes the inn which opens at noon most days.
Next comes the poor section to link to the canal but it is likely to be fine in better weather as it is well walked. At Foss Bridge the bridleway links to the old Foss Way road which then needs a double back Cotbin-2 shows a shortcut opposite the bridge over the dry lock chamber.
It's now plain sailing along the canal, when the water returns. A light controlled crossing has been provided at the road crossing and there is a pavement alongside the quite busy road into the centre of Cotgrave.

15 Jul 2022A pleasant, varied route, but probably not suitable for wheels. I walked from Cotgrave to Bingham, omitting the short road walk in Cotgrave because I linked it with COTRAD 2 and had done that part before with no issues.
The first part is on the canal towpath, a surfaced path that is quite narrow in places. The GPX file suggests you can jump from the towpath onto the old A46 road which is wrong, but there is a bridge over the canal a little further on. This might be more confusing in the other direction.
The GPX follows the right of way line on the field path to Cropwell Butler, but in the first field this would involve crop trampling, and it appears that the path has diverted round the edge for some time. These field paths are unsurfaced, but have no stiles and are easy to follow. Passing through Cropwell Butler, the way continues over a cricket field where the path briefly disappears.
At the point where the path turns north (on joining another path from Tithby), note that the footpath waymarks lead you to follow the east side of the hedge, not the west side as shown on the OS map. Eventually a surfaced farm track is reached, which follows the A52 east and turns slightly south before reaching the Tithby Road (the GPX does not show this correctly). Just when you think you may reach Bingham without crossing a stile, there is one here next to a locked gate across the farm track.
The crossing point of the A52 is obvious, but there are no lights so take care - there is a refuge halfway across which makes it easier.
The walk down into Bingham is easy, though the exact route is a matter of personal taste.
Overall this is a good route but not perfect in accessibility terms.

09 May 2021An easy and enjoyable walk through arable farmland, so no cows. From Cotgrave, the walk is along the Grantham Canal towpath to Fosse Bridge, then crosses fields to the pretty village of Cropwell Butler with its pub, The Plough, The route then follows further field paths to the market town of Bingham. Care is needed when crossing the A52, a busy road, but there is a pedestrian island to make it easier. Some of the paths are not signposted, but are well trod, so can be followed with the aid of a map.
