Description

Goes from Coseley Railway Station via a series of footpaths before joining the Birmingham Canal via a cycle path. Follows towpath of the canal as far as The Old Bush Pub, where it leaves via the car park and joins Hurst Lane, the main road. A turning to the right takes you into a quiet residential area. The roads eventually become a footpath, which comes out on the very busy Birmingham New Road. Crossing here needs to be with great care. Having crossed, a series of paths takes you past the back of the Black Country Museum and then Dudley Zoo. Having emerged on to Castle Hill, it's a short walk to the meeting place by Dudley Bus Station

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

I started this walk from Dudley on a wet day on footpaths passing the entrance to the Zoo with views of the castle. You then at points get views over the Black Country Museum before crossing over the busy Birmingham New Road which i used a pedestrian crossing just below the route. The route through Tipton Green takes you past Mad o' Rourkes Pie Factory which is worth stopping in for a pint of Lump Hammer Bitter and a Desperate Dans Cow Pie. Getting onto the canal means you have to go through the beer garden of the Old Bush pub which all the locals use. This Canal section is a nice change before following footpaths to the meeting place at Coseley Railway Station.

The best route from Dudley to Coseley. Having left Castle Hill and passed the Zoo car park, the footpaths are a nice way to get to the edge of Tipton Green. At stages they overlook the Black Country Museum. Crossing the Birmingham New Road requires some care, but is not impossible. The route through Tipton Green is quiet and residential, before joining the main road, Hurst Lane. Getting on to the Birmingham Canal has to be done via the right hand side through the car park or beer garden of the Old Bush pub which feels a bit strange, but is the only way to do it. The stretch along the canal is nice, the water is very clear and it teems with wildlife. The last section, leaving the canal via a cycle path I'd walked earlier in the day. From there, a series of quiet footpaths take you straight through to the meeting place at Coseley Railway Station.
