02 Feb 2023I walked this route on 29/01/23, from the White Lion pub at Colsterworth to Stamford railway station. The walk south follows a short road section before heading over footpaths alongside the river Witham towards North Witham, crossing a lovely ford before entering the village. The route continues over field footpaths, across the site of the Preceptory of the Knights Templars (very little to see on the ground) before reaching South Witham. There were quite a number of stiles on this stretch. Leaving South Witham there was a steep set of steps up and over a disused railway line, before a fairly long and muddy bit of field walking before reaching the end of the runway at RAF Cottesmore/Kendrew Barracks where it joined the Rutland Round footpath. The route then headed back over fields before crossing safely under the A1 at Stretton.
The route then followed quite a busy section of road walking from Stretton to Clipsham, mostly with sufficient road verges to avoid traffic. The section was about 2km, and 15 cars passed. South of Clipsham the route followed a bridleway, and where it reached Clipsham Old Quary there was a sizable diversion around the eastern edge of the site. This was well-marked, but looks to be recent as the OS Map still shows the original route on the western edge. On the far side the route continued along farm tracks until reaching the hamlet of Pickworth, before a long section also along farm tracks plus a short section of quiet road until Great Casterton. Here the route left the Rutland Round path, and continued along the road through the outskirts of Stamford before reaching the town centre, crossing the Meadows over the river Wellend, and finally to the railway station.
Overall the route was good, relatively easy to follow, but there were long stretches that weren't overly interesting. I counted 10 stiles, all on the western side of the A1. Be aware that, certainly on a Sunday, Stamford railway station has no facilities and there are no shops particularly close by.
