Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

There is no access from the canal to Croft Lane at Gailey Wharf. If you were heading south from Penkridge, you would walk nearly 300 metres too far along before discovering this. I’ve corrected this on CodPen Two, by staying on the canal longer anyway and also not having to walk alongside the busy A449.

This has the potential for a great route but following it from Penkridge, it comes a cropper just before leaving the canal. The route follows the cycle path on the towpath, rather than the Staffordshire Way, which runs parallel on the other side of a fence. The route requires you rejoin the Staffordshire Way where there is no join.

Absolutely fine route with no navigational issues. Walk along the canal in Penkridge is a nice start if a bit of road noise from the M6. Couple of busy roads to cross but all manageable. Mostly field walking but clear throughout. Some interesting halls to look at en route.

There are many stiles and sections which are awkward to access. Parts of this walk are not regularly walked and are awkward to get through. I personally prefer quiet walks, so didn’t enjoy sections walking along main roads, and there is also a short section that follows a very busy but narrow country road that I did not feel safe to walk on.
