Description

This route cuts nearly two miles off the journey and includes passing services halfway at Tibshelf. The extra mile of road walking does have pavement all the way, a mix of close roadside but in places well segregated. It also offers an alternative approach / exit at Clay Cross through the park

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Hugh Hudson

06 Dec 2023 (edited 07 Dec 2023) Autumn

Walked from South Normanton to Clay Cross on a clear winter afternoon. A pretty good direct route, a little road heavy but all the road sections have good pavements. A little wet in places.

From South Normanton we start north along High Street then turn left onto Fordbridge Lane. There is a pavement down the hill but it is raised above the bank on the left of the road, The pavement is continuous all the way to Blackwell, which makes this a good fast route. We turn left at the T junction onto Primrose Hill, then across Alfreton Road to Gloves Lane. Beyond the bridge the road becomes a narrower bridlepath. When we reach the end of the Tibshelf Trail old railway, our path goes right just beyond the cycle track (there are a few unofficial links between the two further on), The path to Tibshelf is good, if a little wet and potentially muddy in places.

We follow streets through Tibshelf, passing a couple of pubs and a Co-Op. A mixture of streets and shortcut paths takes us left to the edge of the village. One field beyond the village, the path divides and we leave the lane half right to follow a field edge down the hill to a footbridge. The large field beyond was recently ploughed waterlogged wet clay, and in retrospect it might have been wiser and quicker to stay on the narrow grass perimeter. Before too long we are on a farm lane, which leads us fairly directly to Pilsley. I missed the point where the footpath leaves the lane left through the school, but the lane itself is just as quick.

We head down Church Street passing the pit wheels on the green, then go left down Pear Tree Avenue and right onto Broom Avenue, then cross left past new housing to find the fenced path into the fields. We then head right up the hill to rejoin Hallgate Lane, which becomes a track beyond the last farm. The stile into the field right was badly overgrown, and I climbed a locked gate beyond it, but I suspect most users of the path to Danesmoor use the stile further on and follow the field edge down, as the right of way line seemed untrodden.

Lower down the path becomes more distinct, and we cross the railway bridge into an industrial estate. The route is easy to follow and brings us to Pilsley Road, where it is probably best to cross immediately and use the pavement on the north side. A well used tarmac path takes us past a school into a park, where we join a road right of the hospital to reach Market Street, where we turn left and eventually cross to the meeting point is by the tunnel vent.

Overall this is a good route, and is considerably shorter and easier than CLASOU one.

03 May 2022 Spring

This is a great walk, far better than I had anticipated walking from South Normanton to Clay Cross on a sunny late April day after weeks of dry weather. There is plenty of nice countryside mostly pasture or field edge in cropped fields. There are stiles and I saw disinterested cattle in just one field. There are also some great views across the upper Amber valley. There are shops, inns and buses halfway at Tibshelf.

From South Normanton it is a mile of road side walking but there is a decent pavement and in places it's well segregated from the traffic.

I didn't find any services in Blackwell unless the pharmacy can provide your needs. From here it's an old lane fenced but open views over more horse paddocks.Turning right don't take the Silverhill Trail, tempting as in might be. Go just a little further and take the unsigned but clear bridleway that starts close to the trail but gradually separates to arrive at the south end of Tibshelf where the route passes a new Co-op store.

More pleasant field walking along the edge of oil seed in full yellow flower as I passed. The locals keep to the field edges perhaps because the farmer fails to reinstate the cross field but it's no hardship. Sitwell Grange Lane has a number of houses most with the selling agent's three essentials, location, location, location. The names tell the full story, Westwood View and Crich View. The footpath is along the unmade road, not a lot of traffic but when a vehicle did pass it set up a cloud of dust.

The footpath bears left leaving the last few yards of track to the cars but chains on the gates and school grounds had me wondering if this path may not always be available. More services in Pilsley and as I passed a bus depatered to Alfreton. Back in the countryside I met those disinterested cattle then more fresh green fields, singing skylarks and a view across to Clay Cross church spire. After the railway the path is again on an unmade industrial service road which can't be avoided. Once on the road at Danesmoor another shop / post office before taking a path that leads to a walk through the park then a short section of road to the meeting place.
