Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

  1. Complete the survey training.

This route, starting from Exeter is OK at the beginning and OK at the end as it approaches
Chudleigh but parts of the middle section leave very much to be desired - Devon can do better than this.

What’s wrong with it:

1. After leaving the canal and crossing the railway it proceeds through Marsh Barton Trading Estate, through Grace Road, Hennock Road Central and Bad Homburg Way. This is reputed tho be the largest Trading Estate in Europe and is the main commuter route into the city from the South. It contains literally dozens of car dealerships and does not make for pleasant walking.
2. At the end of the road it turns sharply left into Dawlish Road. This is an extremely busy narrow lane with blind bends and is simply dangerous for pedestrians. I would not choose to walk it again. A footpath turns off on the left with a stile.
3. The footpath leads to Chudleigh Road. This area is subject to a massive housing development, with the road being re-aligned and the footpath suggested further along on the left will disappear.
4. Crossing the A379 the path eventually goes alongside the major trunk route A30 with a continual traffic drone. After crossing and leaving the A30 the rest of this route is OK until the suggested detour via Kennford.
5. One look at the map shows the circuitous route for this detour with re-aligned roads to make way for the 6-8 lane trunk route the A38 which is a continuation of the M5. The large village does contain amenities including (off route) a hotel, but this is far outweighed by the constant drone of traffic which makes for unpleasant walking along the road route. Eventually the route re-crosses the A38 and turns left on a path and finally road to Chudleigh which is OK.
