Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Slow Ways Cristie
16 Jun 2021I haven't walked this Slow Way but have information to share that has come into the Slow Ways Team. These are suggested amendments which our contact feels would turn the route into four stars:
The route is described in detail in the Chess Valley Walk leaflet published on the website of the Chilterns AONB (chliternsaonb.org). From Chorleywood Station, cross the road and ascend the steps opposite to the common. Cross the common in the direction of the cricket ground and Christ Church. Cross the A404 and enter the main entrance of Chorleywood House grounds. Follow the drive to a T junction. Turn right and keep right at the fork. Descend into the Chess valley and turn right on the track at the bottom. Then follow the Chess Valley walk instructions to Rickmansworth station. This is a bit longer than the original route suggested but much more pleasant and off road. Disadvantages are the short section alongside the M25 and sections of path through Loudwater between high fences.
Happy walking, and if you agree with the amendments above and would like to create a new gpx file that includes them you can upload it via the suggest a better route function.

11 Jun 2021This is a poor route which is too close to the busy A404 to be pleasant. Also there is no public access from Chorleywood Road into the private road Troutstream Way. See photo of locked gate. A better route is using the Chess valley path.

30 May 2021The Slow Wayfarer starting from Chorleywood will encounter a golf course, several gated communities with forbidding signage, roadside pavements and a general sense of being permitted more than welcomed. The sections closer to Rickmansworth are more pleasant, but this Way is best used as a connection between the interior and exterior of the M25 orbital than as a journey in its own right.
Surface generally very good, but narrow footpaths by the Loudwater estate and surprisingly steep cambers on Dog Kennel Road and heading up to Chorleywood Road may give wheels difficulty.
