Martin McGovern

07 Nov 2021 Autumn

This route is enjoyable enough, but there are some challenges to be aware of.

1. About 3.6km out from Chalgrove, the route cuts across a field, which is bisected by a ditch. There might have been a bridge once at SU648989, but there isn't now - I headed north along the ditch and crossed it via the bridge near the reservoir. This approach seemed preferable to heading south and trying to cross by the sewage farm - not because of the smell but I thought it was probably going to be fenced off.
2. To the west of Tetsworth, just before you cross the M40, there are multiple paths signed, but it isn't easy to tell which of them corresponds to the official route - nor which of the signs correspond to navigable paths.

But if you manage to negotiate that, you'll probably enjoy this walk (not recommended for wheels). There's very little on roads, for one thing. Early on there's a memorial to commemorate the death of Parliamentarian leader John Hampden at the civil war battle of Chalgrove, and the farms on the way to Tetsworth have a larger collection of derelict tractors, vans and other equipment than I've ever come across. Finally, the village of Tetsworth offers a welcome mid-route break, and I was treated to seven red kites soaring over the village green.
