Description

Not necessarily better, just different. The main reasons for creating this route were fewer crowds and include Covent Garden’s outdoor shops in Southampton Street. It uses the streets I would normally take between Charing Cross and Covent Garden and then some of the quieter roads and some pedestrian footways towards Holborn. Sometimes it avoids overlapping with ChaHol 2 purely for variety but on both routes it's never long before you come across something new be it a curious shop, street entertainers, a historic titbit, statue, church, unexpected greenery, and more.

This will probably appear on the Slow Ways website as 1 km longer than ChaHol but that's just an odd rounding effect. The true difference is only 130m.

If you are wheeling from inside Charing Cross Station the north western exit is best (and closest to this route) as it has no steps, cobbles or escalator

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

A really enjoyable walk, which packs a lot into a short distance. Generally avoids busy ways but maintains interest throughout. Full marks!.

Started with a quick escape from traffic on The Strand with glimpses of the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery sandwiching a statue of Oscar Wilde; Maiden Lane; Southampton Street - walking boot retail mecca; a short taste of Covent Garden proper (Transport Museum and musical street entertainment just inside SE corner of the market building, plus obligatory swarming tourists but not as crowded as near Cov Gdn tube).

After a brief flirtation with the restaurants of "Theatreland" the walk quickly became very quiet going through Crown Court and other 'courts', narrow car-free lanes, not to be confused with the adjacent Bow Street Magistrates Court and other judicial buildings in the area.

Great Queens Street was a little less polished, but also housed tweed outfitters, men in black tie plus an enormous temple to Freemasonry. The turning to Newton Street is uninviting, underneath an office block, but it was a treat because of the unexpected plant life. Starting with a few dreary planters but then vines and trees bursting into the street, a tall hidden green wall and a marvellous collection of pavement pots. From the top of Newton Road it is only a few hundred metres along High Holborn which is a busy road but less so than Kingsway, the alternative approach to Holborn Station.

There is some traffic on the route at either end but the rest is a mix of quiet or very quiet roads interspersed with pedestrian only areas. A friendly street cleaner on Newton Road confirmed it is always very quiet, not just on Sundays.

The route goes past the Transport Museum entrance (and of course there are other big beasts nearby) but also two smaller museums, the Bow Street Police Museum and the Freemasonry Museum, although entrances are not obvious. And there's a few more small, specialist places within a few hundred metres. The British Optical Association Museum, Korean Cultural Centre and Benjamin Franklin House are just by Charing Cross and the Camera Museum and St John Soanes are both near Holborn, and just across Lincolns Inn Fields from the St J. S. is the Hunterian Museum.
