Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Yorkshire Tea-rekker
07 May 2025Very pleasant walk with a mix of gravel path in the nature reserve and paved road in Castleford and Knottingley. The middle section is the best part of the walk, and the village of Fairburn half way through offers a good pause point for refreshments. Starting and finishing at train stations makes this a great route for those who do not drive.
The sections through the towns are paved and clearly signed making navigating easy. The section through the reserve is not as clearly sign posted but the instructions on this route in Slow Ways ensures this is still easy to follow.
There are areas that are on an relatively steep incline, have gates, and an area before Knottingley which involves a stile and a field, which make this route unsuitable for those using a wheelchair. Those with a moderate level of fitness and correct equipment (trainers were sufficient when this walk was completed on a sunny day in May, but walking boots would be required in winter/wet days) should be able to complete this walk in around 3 hours.
