Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

07 Aug 2024Where did the path go? Started with a beautiful trail along the Eden River which quickly disappeared, we tried to lacoated muitlpe time which meant a lot of bushwacking and retracing steps. We ended up cutting above the river to walk the road as it was extremely overgrown!.

06 Aug 2024The first few miles of this section were very pretty and right next to the river which was a beautiful sight. Sadly the path disappeared in a couple of places which meant a couple of quite tiring and slightly dangerous detours as the land was very steep and it would have been easy to fall quite badly if you'd lost your footing. further more we had to bush whack our way through stinging nettles on a very hot day which was quite an adventure but I wouldn't want to do it again. this route needs a definite rethink.

06 Aug 2024This is quite a tricky section to review. Some of the sections along the river were the most breathtaking of the whole trip from Carlisle to Ripon. Lazonby to Armathwaite is an easy and rewarding walk, with good views and some sections alongside the river on a well walked woodland path. Armathwaite to Wetheral along the river Eden needs to be redone, as much of this walk was impassable. We tried to follow the path as much as possible but the for the most part it disappeared in front of us or just did not exist. We kept going for as long as possible, but ended up battling brambles, ferns, and nettles up a steep hillside to eventually come out in a field and cross under the railway. We then walked along the road until we were able to drop back down to the river closer to Wetheral. Again, some of the most beautiful parts were by the river here with lovely swimming spots, and the path was wider and clear. The detours added a lot to our journey time but Wetheral to Carlisle was quick. I would walk some of the river sections again but not do the walk as it does not connect well.
