27 Dec 2024 Winter

I walked this route from Greenwich to Canada Water on a rather misty winters day.

The route starts near the Cutty Sark and the early stages of the walk provides a rich background of architectural and memorial narrative to British naval history.

Even on a dull day is very clear there’s lots to do and see on this route. It is the type of route that one should devote the whole day to, ignoring the distance, just meandering through history and enjoying the views of the River Thames.

There are plenty of museums, interesting shops, restaurants, cafes, parks and viewpoints all along the way.

There’s also a chance to see the boat traffic on the Thames as it plies up and down taking passengers and less often freight.

There is also rather interesting memorial Peter the Great. This prompted me to research why, especially as it is one of the busiest memorials I’ve come across. It shows the man himself, a throne, plus artillery pieces and some lack “chest”. What’s going on with this memorial? Turns out it is a gift from Russian and commemorates a visit by Pete ( as his friends or no one else ever called him).

If anything, the misty weather added to the sense of history.

After a pleasing stretch walking alongside the Thames, you eventually turn off, heading away from the river but still following docks. These are surprisingly big and full of water and give a real sense of openness.

All too soon you arrive at Canada Water station.

A walk to definitely recommend.

I walked from Greenwich to Canada Water.
If the route seems a little indirect on occasion its because it avoids steps and is very well suited for wheelchairs. Walkers can look for diversions if they wish for a change. A great route for history, for interest, architecture and green spaces. The Russian Dock Woodland is a gem, with a surprisingly naval history. I really enjoyed this route. The views across the river are lovely. A wet and windy day couldn't detract from a good walk.

I really enjoyed this route. It's a relaxing mixture of quiet back streets, Thames Path, green and blue spaces before arriving in historic, bustling Greenwich.
