Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Very pleasant route through the docks in Rotherhithe and along the river. Mostly traffic free.

This is an easy, mostly flat route although some pavements are narrow and uneven in places. There’s plenty to see as well as pubs, bars, coffee shops etc. along the way.

Close to Canada Water there are steps up to Surrey Quays Road which can be avoided with a simple detour around the Decathlon building (follow the lake past the Decathlon store entrance, turn left along the service road to rejoin the mapped route on Surrey Quays Road).

Another set of steps leads down from Pepys Park - there's a narrow, paved ramp at one side for wheeling cycles but wheelchairs will need to go round (turn off the riverside path just after the Pepys Resource Centre and between the two Foreshore blocks, along Foreshore & Barfleur Lane. At the end of Barfleur Lane turn left and immediate left again into Millard Road, to rejoin the mapped route below the steps).

The route is mostly along the river or the relatively quiet roads just behind it, often following the well-signposted Thames Path. The only busy main road is a short stretch along Evelyn Street - this can be avoided with a detour through Sayes Court Park (from Grove Street turn left into the park, follow the Thames Path signs ahead and right emerging into Sayes Court Street. Head straight on towards the main road, rejoining the mapped route at Prince Street).

From the Dog & Bell pub at the far end of Prince Street I’d recommend following the signposted Thames Path route (left into Watergate Street and right along Borthwick Street, rejoining the mapped route at the corner of Deptford Green) - it’s simpler and doesn’t seem any longer.

The route ends near the Cutty Sark, which is next to Greenwich Pier and the Greenwich Foot Tunnel entrance, with the DLR station signposted and close by. There are frequent buses running parallel to the route along the A200, and boarding points for the Thames Clipper riverboats at both Greenland Pier (Surrey Quays) and Greenwich Pier.

This is an interesting, level route on mostly flat, hard surfaces. For the second two-thirds (between Greenland Dock and Greenwich), the route follows the Thames Path National Trail, and National Cycle Route 4, and is well signposted and waymarked. The first part between Canada Water and Greenland Dock is less obvious, and involves a flight of steps up to Surrey Quays Road. There are more enjoyable and level alternative routes through Russia Dock Woodland, which also involve less walking alongside roads.

The middle third of the route includes another flight of steps between Upper Pepys Park and Millard Road. There is an alternative route along Barfleur Road and Bowditch, but it is not well signposted.

There are good facilities (including toilets) at both ends of this walk.
