4 Sept 2024 - A lovely route, full of contrast from the hustle and bustle of Canary Wharf through to peaceful, water-side residential area of the Isle of Dogs, to the uniqueness of the Greenwich tunnel and then out to the splendour of the Cutty Sark and Greenwich village. We found no barriers to access, just a few places on the route (South Quay to Isle of Dogs) where tree roots were lifting the paving slabs - so a bit uneven.

I walked from Greenwich to Canada Water.
Can't add much to previous reviews.
Some poor uneven narrow paving but good for wheels. Slopes and lifts are there as alternatives to steps.
This walk better than public transport.

I completed this 2 mile walk yesterday traveling south from Canary Wharf. It was my first Slow Way in 'The Smoke', and I wasn't really sure what to expect. Just as previous reviewers have done, I have no real hesitance in giving this the full five star treatment. The route doesn't follow any roads, is pedestrianised throughout, and the few roads you do need to cross all have pedestrian crossings. I had my 9yr old daughter with me for this walk, and we both really enjoyed it.

Starting from the base of the iconic One Canada Square, the route takes you immediately due south to a revolving door (photo 2) and through a short indoors section and out again to cross the beautiful South Quay Footbridge (photo 3). If modern architecture interests you, then this section through Canary Wharf really is something else. I can't help but wonder on the £billions that has been spent here, surely a candidate for the slow way with the highest development spend per metre!

The route takes you along South Dock, and then south into West India & Millwall Docks (photos 4 & 5) before crossing the dock via the Dutch styled Glengall Bridge (photo 6). The route then follows Millwall Outer Dock to it's southern extent (photos 7 - 9) where the feel of modern development ends. The route then follows a very brief (50m) section of road before crossing and entering into Millwall Park (photos 10 & 11) where my daughter was pleased to be distracted by a decent child's playground. It's here I contemplated the gulf in demographic difference over the short 1 mile distance between here and Canary Wharf.

Leaving Millwall park, another crossing takes you safely over a road and to Douglas Path (photo 12), a walkway which takes you to Island Gardens and the entrance to the Greenwich Foot Tunnel (photo 14). The northern entrance (photo 13) has fewer steps (87) as opposed to the northern entrance (100), so maybe this direction isn't the easiest to walk, although the lifts at either end were operational had I chose to use them.

The first thing which strikes you when exiting the tunnel is the sheer size of the Cutty Sark. It really is an impressive sight. From here it's a very short walk to the end of the route on Greenwich Church Street (photo 15). It is a really enjoyable walk, worthy of five star recommendation. The few steps or obstructions with revolving doors can all be circumnavigated via more accessible options, and I would definitely walk again.

Upon.

What a route! Direct, safe, offroad, well supplied and varied. Starting from the Cutty Sark in Greenwich, which I last visited on a school trip 40 years ago, the route takes you down the steps into Greenwich Foot Tunnel (there is a lift option to avoid the steps). This gives the route a particular USP. On arrival in the Isle of Dogs, we soon crossed Millwall Park, a friendly and popular space, the original home of Millwall FC. Adjacent to Mudchute DLR station there are a couple of easy roads to cross before an alleyway leads you through to the quayside path through to Canary Wharf. Well worthy of its 5 stars!.

This route was awesome! I loved going under the Thames in the tunnel, and following the canals and waterways into Canary Wharf was stunning. Just at the north end as the route passes through the building, there may be access issues if the building is closed. Also, the entry in the tunnel required quite a long spiral staircase down into the depths below the river. Overall, a gorgeous route.

Solid route. Going through the Greenwich foot tunnel is a treat (if you like that kind of thing).
