19 Apr 2023 Spring

Prior to undertaking this route, I read this review, and was concerned that my walk was to be one of much tribulation. It was. I walked from RWB to Calne. I encountered twelve issues en route, eight between RWB and Hilmarton. Seven of these I got through ( I ALWAYS carry secateurs ), but one, the route has been extinguished by the landowner. This issue is at SU 04492 77034. I continued along the minor road taking the next right ( SU 04199 76356 ) to rejoin the route at Upper Littlecott Farm.
This added 0.15 mi to the route. Overall I recorded the route at 10.83 mi. I have reported the 12 issues to Wiltshire Council, but suspect they will drop into the great Recycling Bin.
I considered uploading the actual route I walked which addressed the one real issue, as whilst the other eleven I got past, but they hardly made the walk one to savour.
I have created an alternative route which avoids the first eight issues, but will not upload until I know the route is achievable.
On the upside I did not encounter any cows, as the ground is still to wet.

31 May 2021 Spring

This was a frustrating walk for seasoned and fit walkers. Near the Royal Wootton Bassett (RWB) end, a lot of paths were overgrown - sometimes with crop. We got fed up of wading through long grass at one point and just walked on road which wasn't too bad. Many of the transitions (styles / fence / gates / bridges) between fields were extremely hard to find buried in hedges, and some were not there at all, necessitating diversions. The route takes you through a field that had a lot of very excitable cows in it. I would not suggest anyone walks through this field when the cows are there, it was a scary experience, but there was no alternative without major backtrack. Many of the paths are not sign posted at the RWB end. All the challenges were at the RWB end - the Calne half is much better.
