Description
I walked Calmar today and found some accessibility issues.
My route is mostly the same the only difference are:
1. In Calne there have been new housing estates build since the last time the OS Maps were updates. There is now no way through. My route by passes these by taking the National Cycle Route starting from Low Lane.
2. Hill's Waste Site has blocked the path so my route carries on the National Cycle Route rejoining the existing route a few hundred meters later.
3. Minor diversion at Compton Basset avoiding a style and taking a more accessible parallel dirt road up the hill.
From Compton Basset to Marlborough there are no changes required

30 Aug 2022An enjoyable route – we walked this in two sections over the August Bank Holiday weekend. Great weather, dry trails and gorgeous views once up on the downs! Perfect for walking, but we did encounter one stile, a few narrow sections and some uneven surfaces that might make it less accessible to others.
The route out of Calne was easy to follow and we soon arrived at the junction with the road to Compton Bassett. Initially there is no pavement here (starts about halfway through the village) but the traffic was so light that it didn’t cause us any issues. Similarly there were very few cars on the other sections of road at Yatesbury and Manton.
Climbing out of Compton Bassett, the countryside opens up a bit more with views to Cherhill Down (Photo 1). From here the trail doubles as an off-road cycleway all the way to Avebury.
Not surprisingly, Avebury was bustling with tourists but has good facilities and several options for refreshment.
From Avebury to Marlborough the route was also easy to follow, although, the section across Fyfield Down (after leaving the Wessex Ridgeway path – Photo 2) appeared to have no waymarkers and could be trickier in poor visibility.

25 Aug 2022Fine alternative created by eliot, overcoming the issues in Calmar one of the new housing estate being constructed. Like Calmar one the route passes through Compton Bassett which has a good pub ( just off route ), and many facilities( cafe, pub, buses, toilets etc ) in Avebury ( within the middle third )
Like all towns, there are a number of routes in/out, and personally in Calne I would prefer, bearing right at St Marys Church, then left up Kingsbury St into The Green, continue up Horsebrook, then right following a track alongside the Marden, this then comes out on Brewers Lane, where you turn left rejoining Anchor Rd at SU 003 705. I appreciate this sounds a bit convoluted, but I didn't think it merited another Calmar route.

23 Apr 2022We walked this route on 15th Apr 2022. The weather was warm and sunny and had been dry for several days beforehand. The path was dry underfoot for the whole root.
Other than the few points mentioned below the route was very pleasant, easy to follow and easily accessible to those on foot. We would recommend it as a great route, with the added bonus of walking right through the centre of the historic Avebury stone circle.
There were the usual gates and stiles to be expected on a rural route which may prove a barrier to those less able or on wheels
Just outside Calne the path skirts the edge of a landfill site for half a mile or so which was inevitably smelly and litter strewn.
Immediately after this the route follows the road into the pretty village of Compton Bassett (nice looking pub - the White Horse) for about a mile. We had to keep an eye open for cars as the road was a little busy and there were only grassy verges, no footpaths.
