Description
This route shows 3 minor changes from Caepon1: 1 & 2 are footpath diversions and 3 is an access issue.
1) The Hollies, just N of the M4 - instead of going across the property, go around the land, past the entrance gate.
2) At The Malthouse Farm, between M4 & St Mellons Rd, the path stays in the field rather than through the property (clearly marked).
3) Instead of crossing the playing field, stay on the road at Heol Pontprennau/Heol Glandulais. The field was only accessible at one end today, plus any sporting activities would restrict access

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

31 May 2024This route links the northern Cardiff suburb of Pontprennau to central Caerphilly, and my wife and I walked it from Pontprennau→Caerphilly on 30 May 2024. Excluding stops, it should take about 2:45 hours. I estimate it to be about 11km. Once the route leaves Pontprennau and reaches its rural section, it is very good, offering beautiful paths and fields, views over the Bristol Channel and some lovely houses and horses to look at along the way. Tips from us would be to use the field boundaries near Malthouse Farm Lisvane as navigation "handrails" and to stick to the tarmac of Graig Llwyn Road rather than encroach on the path at the private house at OS Ref 3198•1849. Ensure that you proceed on a path to the West of "The Hollies" 3192•1839. Look for the ventilation shaft chimney over the railway tunnel at Transh Yr Hebog. Descending into Caerphilly, the woodlands of Wern Ddu and The Warren are beautiful. My only gripe is that the GPX file offered for download has too few node points to guide the walker, with higher definition the route would be easier to follow. In conclusion, this is one of the very best walks we have done in the Cardiff area and we give it five stars.

06 Sep 2023September 2023. Direction: Pontprennau to Caerphilly.
A really nice walk through a variety of terrain. The first part snakes along the Heol Pontprennau, but it`s not far before reaching the fields off St. Mellons Road. The route is fairly well signposted on this section and the styles and gates are in good condition, although a couple of direction signs are missing here and there. After leaving the fields and lanes and entering the woodlands, the path zig-zags up the mountain. There are a number of criss-crossing footpaths here, and not much signage, but the route mostly follows the main path going up the mountainside. On the way down the other side. a good map is needed through the Wern Ddu forestry section. There is some interesting industrial heritage along on this part, before emerging into the fields on the edge of Caerphilly.

20 Nov 2021This is a good route along clearly marked well-used paths through woods and grassy fields. However, there are a couple of potential hazards:
1) Just S of the M4 you need to jump/splash across the stream at Nant Glandulas. It was easy today but may be trickier after heavy rain.
2) Care is needed on the tiny stretch of St Mellons Rd between the footpath to Malthouse Farm and the start of the pavement: a few metres of narrow road, blind bends and oncoming traffic.

30 May 2022At Malthouse Farm the footpath available is a permissive diversion provided by the landowner who should apply for a formal diversion. At The Hollies the Slow Way has been diverted onto a different footpath perhaps because the landowner is obstructing the original path. This should be reported to the Highway Authority.
