Description
This option follows a section of the newly signed "South Hams Way" long distance path. At the totnes end it uses extensively the excellent paths in the grounds of Dartington Hall. Between the river crossing near to Staverton and Buckfastleigh the route uses minor roads and paths to the east of the River Dart. It does climb high and is a bit longer than routes to the west. But it does avoid the long road section, and is indeed an excellent route. There are kissing gates and stiles and some of the paths require passing over tree routes and large rough steps. There are refreshment opportunities at Dartington Hall and at Staverton Station

15 Sep 2025I walked this route on a Sunday in mid-September on a rainy day. I did though enjoy the walk, the paths through the grounds of Dartington Hall are a particular delight. It is relatively easy to follow as it is signed (white arrows on a blue background) as it is part of a newly formed long distance trail of 100 miles - The South Hams Way. There are good places to stop for refreshment at Dartington Hall or at Staverton Station. I walked it from Totnes to Buckfastleigh. Take care when crossing the busy A384 and look out for the short off road riverside path between the road crossing and Austin's Bridge. Despite the heavy rain, particularly in the last hour or so. I thoroughly enjoyed the walk. I returned to Totnes (after taking refreshment in The Kings Head using the Buctot2 Slowway making a good day out (if a somewhat wet one), other options are a bus service (not Sundays) or the steam train.
