Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

20 May 2024Pleasant villages and quiet countryside but this walk is spoilt by the need to walk a busy and fast road between Bitteswell and Ashby Parva. I have studied the map and can see no suitable off road route so I recommend taking the bus. I would not walk this road section again.
From the meeting point I was tempted to take Church Street passing the shops then cutting through a pleasant tiny park as the route might turn into George Street. Had I strayed from the route I’d have missed the stunning surprise of a short public footpath that passes through the yard of the Greyhound Coaching Inn.
A roadside pavement starts the real exit then a footpath to Bitteswell crosses a pleasant meadow which can be wet in places. Bitteswell is an idyllic village with a large village green, church and inn but we are only just started so there should be no need of a break.
Ashby Road starts well with a pavement but unfortunately this ends just before a bend in the road. The road ahead is hidden and as I cross to be on the outside and facing oncoming traffic a bus grinds to a halt. The verge is too overgrown and narrow to step onto so I was fortunate the driver was able to stop. It’s a busy road and the verge remained useless. This is not a nice road to be walking along so I feel I have to fail the route with the caveat that the bus runs hourly between Bitteswell and Ashby Parva, I would strongly recommend its use. Ashby offers an inn just off route.
North of Ashby the route takes to field paths, rather neglected but the plot and yellow topped posts assist navigation to Leire Mill. A better bit of road walking to the village where two inns offer a break along with a seat at the village hall. More acceptable road walking then a tunnel path where a stile sits in the light at the end.
We cross a few fields then houses appear on the right while we remain in countryside, or perhaps a field awaiting development. The route passes the church and the meeting point is close by. It is located at the boundary Broughton Astley and Primethorpe two once small independent settlements that have now grown into a town. A group of shops can be found further along Main Street.
