21 Sep 2022I walked Burntwood to Brownhills. A pleasant tour along well used paths at Chasewater, less use south to Brownhills but still well defined which is useful as the plot is very poor. I perhaps failed to follow the designed route along the many paths at Chasewater, although I avoided the boardwalk and muddy section by passing the Rugby field. There is a steep slope between the reservoir dam path/s and the canal towpath which can be avoided with a there and back. Also there are steps between the canal and old rail path. A pleasant walk but one open to your own interpretation so I only offer two stars as a Slow Way.

23 May 2021Very much the "pretty route" compared to Brobur 2. Less direct, less reliable in terms of surfaces but this is still a Slow Way worth walking. Just under a month since I walked Brobur two, I started this walk from Sankeys Corner in Burntwood. Whereas you the other version takes you straight down Burntwood High Street past the bakery, shops and pubs this one instead, takes you along the wide pavement of the busy A5190 Milestone Way (1) past a large Morrisons. On arrival at Chasewater Country Park by Chasewater Heaths Station (2) (tourist railway) you cross the railway line and turn left to join a track (3). The route is very well marked and in this section was dry. After a short while the path starts to skirt the edge of Chasewater (4 & 5). As the track turned left to avoid the sailing club, a profusion of duck boards gave me a warning I was heading somewhere damp. The area surrounding the path becomes marshy and I soon found the entire path was under water (6) due to recent rain. Near here the path emerges on to a lane, which you cross and join a path which then runs along the dam (7). The route follows a lower contour which meets Anglesey Wharf seamlessly but I decided to follow the top level to enjoy the view. As I passed various walkers I noticed a woman covering her face and head looking slightly distressed. As I looked ahead I thought I could see a dust cloud that was clearly bothering people. It soon became apparent that it was actually a swarm of greenfly. Not very pleasant, but the swallows seemed pleased! The route then goes left to join the end of the Wyrley and Essington Canal at Anglesey Wharf (8). The walk along the canal is friendly and well used (9) and is a good way to cross under the M6 Toll (10). After enjoying a further stretch of the canal (11) I soon recognised that I was in the same spot (12) as I had found myself on my first Slow Way from Lichfield to Brownhills, nearly a month before. It's shortly after this that you go down some steps to join the McClean Way, the old railway (13) now dedicated to walking and cycling. You walk along for a stretch before exiting to the left (14). The marking of the route does not make this clear. You emerge in Brownhills (15 - sorry about the top of the picture) and turn right to reach the shelter that is the meeting point.
