Description
Direct, safe, easy to follow route. Leaving from the meeting point it crosses via the pedestrian crossings to Brownhills High Street. It follows the High Street, crossing at the pedestrian crossing and then passing through the Civic Square. The pedestrianised Pier Street takes you to an accessible bridge which crosses the Wyrley and Essington canal to the towpath side. The route then follows the towpath south for the majority of the route emerging on to Stubbers Green Road in Aldridge which it follows into the town. It crosses the road to go to the meeting point via the bus interchange in the middle of the town and the shopping centre. The meeting point is a small walk across a park from the town centre

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

02 Oct 2022This was my favourite of the four Slow Ways circuit I covered on this walk. The pictures are all those I would have submitted so no need for me to add any. Shame there are no passing boats but the canal is navigable and linked to the nationwide canal network. Sadly most Birmingham canals are ignored by pleasure boaters who to my mind, don't know what they are missing.
Authorised in 1794 as a branch of the Wyrley and Essington Canal the lock free Daw End Branch was built to serve Hay Head Limeworks. Like the main canal known as the Curly Wyrley it twists and turns around any hill or valley along the course. It is therefore surprising to find the towpath high about the surrounding ground in some places.
Along the towpath I met only a few walkers, joggers and cyclists. It's a very easy and relaxing green blue path with more open undeveloped space alongside which makes it a peaceful oasis in a conurbation that is often considered a concrete jungle, this Slow Way offers an invite to a new leisure location.
I especially liked the angler casting his steel cut out rod and the huge miner at walks end in Brownhills. This revised route enters Brownhills high street at what I believe should be the meeting place for the town. So one picture but not a very good one.

28 Jun 2022The advantage of this version of the route is that it goes through Brownhills high street (plenty of places for refreshments) before joining the canal for the majority of the walk to Aldridge.
Overall a picturesque walk and easy to follow slow ways route. Plenty of wildlife to see and will certainly do this walk again.

30 Jun 2022Please note that a short section of the towpath is closed from 3 May 22 to 21 October 22 due to the rebuilding of the Black Cock Bridge. There is, however, an easy cut around via Hall lane which parallels the canal.

22 Aug 2021Straightforward, easy to follow, incredibly relaxing. I started this from Aldridge. Usefully it passes through the shopping centre and the bus interchange (which would actually be a better meeting place). Finding the canal is easy as the route follows the pavement of the main road. The Wyrley and Essington Canal doesn't appear to be open to craft although some are moored. As a consequence, the water is full of vegetation and fish and is clear. The canal passes under various roads and through various neighbourhoods but I felt quite removed, in a nice way. The towpath became more popular as I got nearer Brownhills. The bridge to cross the canal into Brownhills has stairs and a ramp so is accessible for wheelers. Last time I'd been to Brownhills the Civic Square was under construction but it's finished now. It's not far from there up Brownhills High Street to the meeting place in the shelter, near Jigger the Brownhills Miner. A really enjoyable walk and a good example of a Slow Way.
