Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

29 Feb 2024Walked from Brixworth to Northampton. Most of this route is excellent, on good surfaces, However I was unable to complete the section alongside the Nene (Brampton branch) north of Mill Lane because part of the path (not a formal right of way) on the east side of the river was fenced off for some kind of maintenance work. I used the WestNor Two/National Cycle Network route to reach Mill Lane, but looking at OpenStreetMap it might have been possible to use the next path to the west that crosses the river on a footbridge, which would have shortened the detour. There is a new roundabout being built next to Boughton station, and there is currently a pedestrian diversion round its west side, less than obvious from the north.
From Brixworth we head east a short distance then south along Northampton Road. Take advantage of one of the zebra crossings to cross to the east side, as there is a section with no pavement on the east side, which includes the roundabout at the bottom of Knightons Way. There is a central refuge by the bus stops that serve Blackthorn Crescent. Cross here then take the right turn down the charmingly named Merry Tom Lane. The lane, which is gated, heads down the hill and over another small hill.
Eventually we pass a farm then turn left onto the Brampton Valley Way. It appears that they are extending the heritage railway a little further north here. We follow the railway, initially on the left but crossing to the right beyond Pitsford and Brampton station, then pass Boughton Mill and the new Boughton station to reach the new roundabout on the A5199. Since my last visit in September (see my review of Westnor two) the trail south of the roundabout has been reopened, but the route round the incomplete roundabout is not immediately obvious, if in doubt stay right/west. We follow the trail out until it follows the Northampton-Rugby railway to the Brampton branch of the Nene.
Here our route takes the unofficial and slightly muddy path through the fields by the river, but unfortunately this was (I think temporarily) blocked and fenced off, which forced me into a detour. I was able to rejoin the route on Mill Lane, which has a useful pelican crossing by the path right, which we follow into Kingsthorpe Park. We take the well trodden but unsurfaced path along the far edge of the park and out to Harborough Road. The rest of the route is a simple and direct pavement walk to the meeting point by the bus station, with pelican crossings at all of the busier junctions. It is best to cross to use the east pavement earlier rather than later.
