Description
The route has been altered as it approaches Melksham to avoid crossing the very busy A350 ( OS ST 89962 63437 )
The revised route goes through Berryfields, and crosses the A350 at a roundabout with crossing island
100 m from the roundabout there is also a controlled crossing.
A review by John Myerson has highlighted a computer glitch in Hilperton. Stay on the towpath for all three Bramel routes. Regarding elaborating on the walk route to Whaddon Church, I confess I live in Melksham, so the route is obvious to me, I can only say, follow the river to the Packhorse Bridge, then head towards Whaddon Church. 31 Aug 2024I started from Melksham having got there from Bradford on Avon by the 69 bus. Public toilets at the Market Place. Plenty of cafes and food shops in the High Street.
Going south, the A350 roundabout is best crossed on the eastern side where there are traffic lights. The path from Semington Road to Berryfield Lane was partially overgrown with brambles. Fortunately I had my portable pruners! After Holbrook Vale, although the path is marked, it crosses two fields of crops which at this time are stubble. The following field had a large number of cattle who were very curious and I was a little intimidated. A slow walk was the answer and although they followed me to the next gate they never came too near (Bramel three to avoid this!). Further on is a Packhorse Bridge which dates from 1725, and the 12th century church of St. Mary the Virgin. I used Whaddon Lane to get to the canal towpath. There's a slight error in the GPX at Marsh Road, Hilperton. The towpath stays on the north side of the canal. No need to cross the bridge. Cafe, pubs and toilets at Bradford Wharf (by the locks). More toilets in the station car park and cafes in Bradford centre.

01 Sep 2024Agreed, the glitch on Hilperton applies to all three routes. Basically I adapted the volunteer route ( Bramel one ) to take out the dangerous crossing of the A350
