Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

I walked this route in late June! If I could, I'd give the first part of this walk from Arundel to Ford 3 stars and the second part from Ford to Bognor Regis 5 stars!

The first part mostly follows the river Arun. The path was super overgrown in parts when I walked it, there were lots of stinging nettles and the ground was uneven so you have to be mindful when walking.

The second part was smooth sailing and passes through Yapton where you can stop for refreshments. It was a varied walk, through crop fields and woods and around the houses. A solid route.

I walked this route from Arundel to Bognor on 27-06-2022.

The first part of the route out of Arundel uses the western bank of the River Arun as far as the church at Ford. This section is quiet, pretty and easy to follow, although at this time of the year the grass is quite high which would make it awkward to push through with a pushchair.

From Ford the route heads across sections of the old airfield, across fields and around the side of old warehouses to reach Yapton. Then it is quiet streets and twittens through the village, followed by a long, straight farm path track between Yapton and Flansham. House building is in full swing at the Yapton end, but the footpath remains open for a change.

From Flansham, through Felpham to Bognor the route is mainly residential. A couple of small fields have yet to be built on. The new Bognor by-pass (A259) has to be crossed, but although this is busy, there is a central reservation which helps.

There is a shop at Yapton, the half-way point, and possibly other facilities which I didn't spot.

Overall the route is well plotted and easy to follow with few obstacles. There is a lot construction work going on in this area, so if your map is a couple of years old (like mine) what you see on the ground may be quite different to what is depicted on the map.
