26 Nov 2025I felt this walk, though modest in length, needed pioneering. At 5½ miles it is two‑thirds of a mile longer than the alternative “Bloald Two,” but the extra distance is no hardship, and the satisfaction of confirming an alternative pleasant course more than compensates.
The route leaves Bloxwich by quiet suburban roads, passing through Blakenall Heath, and soon reaches the delightfully named Slacky Lane bridge over the Wyrley and Essington Canal at Goscote. Here the walker enjoys a brief interlude beside the water, hemmed between the canal and the young trees of the Black Country Millennium Forest. The canal is soon relinquished, however, for a metalled footpath skirting the back of a housing estate and a green strip by Rough Brook. Gypsy cobs were grazing here when I passed, a pleasing sight, lending pastoral charm to an otherwise urban margin.
At Station Road the pavement resumes, carrying the walker through Rushall and along Daw End Road. The Boathouse pub marks a welcome diversion: a footpath between pub and bridge returns one to the canal, this time the Daw End Branch of the Wyrley and Essington. This towpath section is longer than the earlier canalside stretch, but no less agreeable, until the way leaves again at Dumblederry Lane bridge. Thereafter it is pavement walking once more, circling the Morrisons supermarket and concluding in Aldridge town centre.
The route is flat throughout, the only rises being the humps of canal bridges. There are no stiles, gates, or steps to impede progress. Mud was encountered on the Aldridge canal section after rain, but it was not troublesome. In summary: a straightforward walk, with modest interest, linking two communities by canal and pavement. I commend it to others, and would willingly repeat it.
