Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

I walked this route from Whickham to Blaydon on February 19th. Not much to add to the previous review. I was glad to be starting in Whickham though as I could walk down the steep hill.

When places are close to together in urban settings, then sometimes finding a route that isn't on road is difficult - and this is one of those cases.

The route starts at Blaydon railway station, which is a footbridge away from the bus station, shops and cafes. You set off running parallel to the railway following the slip road coming off the A695. At the junction you cross under the A695 and follow the B6317. Stay on the left hand side and follow the path which in a couple of places can be followed away from the road itself (pic 1).

A short diversion to Shibdon Pond is often rewarded with encounters with wildfowl, especially the various breeds of geese. Back on the road you hit the A694 roundabout. The safest crossing is to turn left and walk 150 metres to the zebra crossing on the A694 and then come back. Having walked that far along you can then take the footpath 100m from the junction on then left and cross the quiet old Derwent Bridge (pic 2) and follow the track back on to the B6317.

Opposite the rugby club, use the central refuge to cross the road then stay on the right hand side past the entrance to Derwent Country Park (pic 3). The route then bears right and heads up Whickham Bank. This is a steep climb by urban standards, climbing 100+ metres in just under a kilometre.

At the traffic lights at the top of the hill, cross safely on to the left side of the road as you head into the urban village of Whickham.

The route is suitable for wheels along it's length, although the steepness of Whickham bank may be difficult depending on how our wheels are propelled.

Overall, an adequate route that gets you from A to B, but without a long detour difficult to see how it could be made off road.
