Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

16 Sep 2021While this is a very beautiful route, and the Tarf Hotel bothy provides a wonderful shelter in the remote southern Cairngorms, this route should not be undertaken without significant preparations and hillwalking skills. The first twenty kilometres are very comfortable and straightforward on a two-track path (with narrower options at times), though there are no places to stop to eat or sleep. The last five kilometres are through wet, pathless, boggy terrain which can almost guarantee soaked feet, and requires a map and compass or GPS to navigate safely. Though some maps show a path on this last stretch, it is practically non-existent. This route is excellent for a hillwalking adventure, but not very practical for getting from one place to another (unless your only destination is the bothy and you don't mind getting wet feet). The same applies to the alternative route which is slightly shorter but climbs Carn a Chlamain. An upside is that this route is not particularly steep, climbing slowly from 150 m to 550 m.
