Description
This is a straightforward pleasant alternative, using the canal towpath for nearly the whole way, and avoiding the nasty motorway roundabout of the original route

13 Aug 2022Leaving Rishton the route passes a Co-op on the way to the canal. The towpath can be accessed from either side of the road. You have to cross the road first for the west side, and there is a shallow wide gravel slope and a cycle barrier 40cm at the top; and for the east side the access is a steeper slope but tarmacked, and no barrier.
The bulk of this route is now towpath, either gravel or degraded tarmac, with a couple of uneven patches. It is generally quite pleasant going, although there are a lot of pylons, and urban areas and roads are often nearby. There are some interesting old mills along the route too. Also, I saw many dragonflies, and a weasel!
Near the midpoint there is access, via steps, to a retail park where Home Bargains has a café and disabled toilet.
You leave the towpath in Blackburn via an open pub car park. Unfortunately, there is an unavoidable kerb up to this, followed by a cobblestone roadway. I imagine this could stop the route being wheelchair accessible, but I would be happy to walk it pushing a baby buggy.
There is a Public Right of Way marked on the OS Map cutting the corner to Blackburn Station, but this goes through an enclosed and covered supermarket car park, and I don't know if this is always open.
I think the canal towpath is probably the ideal route for this largely urban Slow Way.
