03 Dec 2021This route leaves Blackpool on pleasant suburban roads, with a few interesting buildings along the way. It crosses Stanley Park which is an excellent park with an Art Deco café, gardens and a boating lake, which the route crosses over two wide bridges. At the time of writing there had been cases of avian flu amongst the lake’s wildfowl, and the lake was roped off so I had to walk around the lake, but normally this is open. Leaving the park there is a pelican crossing then a cycle-and-walkway past the front of Blackpool Zoo.
The route along the side of the zoo and then towards Normoss has a choice of hard-surfaced cycle track or a gravelled woodland walk next to the stream. The two are close together and you can switch between them. There are some picnic tables by the stream.
The route is slightly let down by a wide kissing gate into the new housing estate, otherwise I think the whole route would have been pretty easy to wheel. The opening is about 80cm wide. There are also cycle traffic-calmers but they are quite wide.
The route weaves through pleasant housing and then through Normoss, where there are various facilities, and fields on one side of the road. Fields line Benedict Drive which leads to more new housing, and then a gate-enclosed road cuts through to the main road into Poulton-le-Fylde. These gates have walkarounds which are quite wide. At the Poulton end the gate itself is padlocked, but the chain can be lifted over the post anyway! Locals told me it is used in this way by people on mobility scooters! The walk into Poulton from here is straightforward along paved roads.
