Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

24 Apr 2021 Spring

This is an incomplete walking review as I didn’t have time to walk the section on the Blaydon side of the river but I did drive past it as I wondered if there was a footpath over the bridge, which there is. I walked from Denton Burn down to the River Tyne without crossing over the river. The stretch down from Denton Burn through the Dene is a good Slow Ways route for being set off the main road. It is an obvious, accessible paved path. You could hear bird song and there were bluebells in the wooded section (April 2021). The path in and out of the Dene, as well as the walk down to the river requires walking up or down a hill. There were dog walkers about and a couple of groups of children. On the negative side, there is evidence of groups having gathered in places where a fire has been lit and litter left. There is A LOT of broken glass, along the path pretty much all the way along. I personally wouldn’t walk a dog there although others were doing so. (There is a top path in the wooded section (West of the path) which had minimal glass at the time I walked it). The ponds need some maintenance. This is a shame as it is a good path and a lovely section on a sunny Saturday afternoon. At certain times of day, as a lone female, I know I would feel more anxious walking through here. Others may feel differently. At time of writing the marked route follows a non-existent footpath through the Dene. Instead, a paved route exists and it is the obvious way through. You can’t get lost. Towards the end (Southbound), just after the football club (Blue Star) you have to join the road slightly earlier than the route on the map. Northbound, you just turn off the road at the obvious path sign posted for the Hadrian’s Wall path. After the Dene, heading towards Blaydon, the route is a footpath next to a very busy road. There are crossings before you get to the bridge and a path over the bridge. Once over the bridge you walk alongside an industrial estate along a busy road. The road is pretty unavoidable in order to get to Blaydon on the most direct route. I did however spot that you could do an alternative route here along the river and then through the industrial estate at the end. Coming off the bridge there is a clear gap where you walk through to get to the river path. I didn’t have time to check this river path out and would prefer to walk it with someone else. I gave 3 stars for the industrial and busy road section and for the broken glass and litter in parts in the Dene, which should have scored better.
