Description

The original route bypassed Dyce, which is a fairly major transport hub with a railway station.

-This route goes through Dyce with an option to head for the railway station, instead of continuing to Aberdeen if desired.
(For Dyce Station continue along Wellheads drive after taking the sweeping bend around the south end of the airport runway.)

This route also has the following advantages:

-Includes some beautiful walking through Kirkhill Forrest.

-Makes use of many of the new shared use cycle / pedestrian paths through Dyce and Stoneywood.

-Has an option to stop off at Persley walled garden.

-Picks up the river don waymarked trails (behind Persley walled garden)

-Walks past Grandholm bridge and the new Diamond bridge

-Walks along the newly constructed elevated boardwalk at Donside village

-Makes a grand entrance into the city via Old Aberdeen, walking past St Machar Cathedral, Kings College, Marischall College, and finally the Maritime museum before reaching Union Square

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

31 Oct 2024 (edited 01 Dec 2024) Autumn

This was a really beautiful walk, on a lovely sunny autumn day.

Left Blackburn at 11:30 on a Monday

1 hour
After leaving the main tracks through Kirkhill forest take the less used farm tracks that head in the general direction of the Aberdeen bypass.

When reaching the junction at the end of the farm tracks, take the field on the left not the overgrown path straight ahead.

When reaching the corner of the field, there is a path near a small berry tree to the right of the bungalow.

1 hour 15
Walk down past Marshall trailers, and alongside the main road for a short period (under the bypass.)

2 hours 15
Optional rest stop at Persley walled garden
Take the high path behind the gardens.
(Low path blocked by fallen tree)

2 hours 45
Grandholm bridge.
Take the cobbled road up to Tillydrone

3 hours
Look for the way marked path that takes you off the pavement and down the steps back to the river / under Diamond bridge
(Ignore the first steps down, take the second set)

3 hours 15
Take the elevated boardwalk at Downside village, continue on to Seaton park and up the ramped road to St Machar Cathedral.

4 hours 15
Arrive at Union square

4 -5 hours should be appropriate for most walkers.
Hillwalking boots required for some sections.
