Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

11 Nov 2023 Autumn

November 2023. Direction: Blaina to Blaenavon.

Love the code name for this route "Blabla...". A lovely, bracing mountain walk at this time of year. The views across the valley to Cwmcelyn, as you climb the mountainside from Blaina are excellent. The path is easy to navigate for the first half, as it`s a well worn mountain path, but the diagonal path leading from the ridge path on top of the mountain just before reaching the two wind turbines is not easy to pick out, so you may need to follow a heading across the grass. The path from the top down towards Blaenavon is initially through bracken, and even at this time of year was still a little overgrown, but at least it was a definite path underneath. However, it may be a little difficult to pick out coming up from Blaenavon, even more so in the summer and early autumn, but worth spending a little time trying to find the right path rather than a yomp through the virgin bracken. There are some great views over Blaenavon and the Lloyd Valley on the way down. It was quite boggy in a couple of areas on the lower slopes going down into Blaenavon, but with care is ok. This walk was on a lovely clear day, but after a prolonged spell of rain for a few days. Hard walking in places, but well worth the effort. If time allows, it`s worth spending some time checking out Blaenavon`s industrial legacy at the UNESCO World Heritage sites.
