Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

05 May 2021Unfortunately there is a temporary closure of the footpath to repair 2 bridges close to Norton Fitzwarren allotments. Closure is from 16.5.20 - 16.5.22. No obvious safe detour and the B3227 is very busy with no footpath. However, would give the overall walk 3 stars. The walk is very scenic with the Quantock hills in the distance between Bishops Lydeard and Norton Fitzwarren.
Many sections along the route are liable to flooding. The Railway line has two crossings and one bridge with steep steps so unsuitable for ‘wheelers’. From Norton Fitzwarren to Taunton it is very flat and the path follows meandering streams and rivers. Shame about temporary path closure.

29 Apr 2021 (edited 27 Jun 2023)Overall the route is very pleasant with much of the walk on tracks and footpaths. Particularly enjoyable is at the start of the route which takes you up out of Bishops Lydeard where you can enjoy lovely views of The Quantocks. The owl box near the solar farm is of interest.
However, just before Norton Fitzwarren allotments, there was a notice advising of the closure of two footbridges across Norton Brook, due to safety concerns. (The notice is dated May 2020). I did venture across the first one as the barriers had been removed, but felt the second one should not be crossed as the barriers at each end were clearly still in place. I diverted by continuing alongside the allotments, continuing onto Manor Gardens and into Stembridge Way. An alley brought me out onto the Wiveliscombe Road. This is a busy road and I had to walk on a narrow verge and on the road until rejoining the path by Ford Farmhouse.
A few written instructions would help in following the route. Whilst the foot bridges are closed there needs to be a safe diversion suggested. For this reason I have given the route one star for the time being.
