I'll be generous and give this route 4 stars since it is mainly a lovely route, even though I found the same problems as the first reviewer. There are two unpleasant stretches of road without space for safe walking. The first is on just leaving Bishop's Waltham - I tried the alternative Beeches Hill but it is just as busy and unsafe. The second is a longer stretch from Kilmeston into Cheriton, which is longer but less busy. They spoil what is otherwise a wonderful walk - the rest of it is beautiful, a mix of farm tracks, footpaths across fields and bridle ways, all well marked. Much of the southern half follows the Monarch's Way, the northern half the Wayfarer's Walk; I agree that a detour following the long distance footpath via Hinton Ampner would probably be beneficial rather than the road in Cheriton. At the Bishop's Waltham end I could avoid much of the main road by following the High Street to St Peter's Church and then Free Street, which is a recommended diversion. At the Alresford end, Sun Lane is now unfortunately an ugly building site for a new housing development. Until it is complete, it might be nicer to turn the other way on Tichborne Down and arrive into the town centre along Jacklyn's Lane (which is also the bus route for Winchester). So in conclusion this is a lovely route which I would like to recommend if the road sections were avoided.

A lovely route from the medieval town of Bishop's Waltham to the steam railway town of Alresford, passing through small villages and past a National Trust property. The route is mainly via well marked footpaths through rolling countryside with some great views.

It should be noted that there are two sections of road that have fast traffic and no footpaths. These are at the start of the route out of Bishop's Waltham and can be easily avoided by consulting an OS map and finding an alternative route.

Additionally, when reaching Hinton Ampner, National Trust property, I'd suggest walking down Hinton Hill and straight over the A272 and back onto footpaths, rather than going on the road through Cheriton Village.

This should be a 5 star walk. However downgraded to account for road section at start.
