Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

12 Jul 2024 Summer

I walked from Bishops Waltham to Horndean over two days (as I live in the middle)
Overall a really lovely walk through some of the South Downs and really lovely rolling hills and countryside, passing through some picturesque rural villages along the way.

I really enjoyed the part from Soberton to Horndean, but found the walk from Bishops Waltham to Swanmore incredibly dull! This first hour is walking alongside the road (on pavements) is unbelievably tedious. I would definitely recommend starting (or finishing) from Swanmore if you are just looking for a nice walk! (although the same could be said about the other end walking though Horndean!) That said Bishops Waltham is a beautiful Historic Market Town and well worth the visit.
Fairly easy to navigate, although I carried my OS map it wasn't heavily relied on. One patch coming out of Swanmore is tricky as Hill Farm Orchards (marked on both OS and Open Street Map) have moved the footpaths around and there are now large fences you don't want to end up on the wrong side of!! Also got confused coming out of Hambledon, but got back on the path easily enough.
Plenty of pubs passed on the way, and most of the villages have somewhere to stop and eat/drink/rest so there is no need to do this route in a rush.
Both ends have decent bus connections so would make a really lovely day out.
NOTE: from Soberton this route follows the same route as Corhampton to Horndean.
