28 Mar 2022The route leaves Bingley Station past a big supermarket on over a footbridge to access the canal towpath. Initially there is a lot of traffic noise but the canal soon moves away from the main road, and this becomes a really lovely route. The surface of the towpath is wide and well compacted. After the locks at Dowley Gap the towpath swaps sides over a bridge. There are slopes but not steps.
The aqueduct over the River Aire is impressive and the river runs alongside the canal for a time. There was lots of spring birdsong along here. It was quite popular, on a sunny spring Saturday, with cyclists as well as dog-walkers and buggy-pushers - but no wonder, it was really nice.
The canal passes between two big mills of Saltaire, a beautiful UNESCO heritage village created by Titus Salt for his workers, and well worth a visit.
Unfortunately, the bridge to leave the canal has a flight of steps before crossing the canal itself. It is then a short walk to Shipley Station, with its peculiar triangular layout.

27 Mar 2022Bingley to Shipley along the Leeds Liverpool Canal. A pleasant easy route. The tow path is well maintained. The route is used by alot of cyclists, so depending on the time and day so be on the lookout. Majority of the cyclists are respectful and considerate. I walked this route with a group of 15, and found it quite an easy walk.
It is quite accessible - easy for pram-users as well.
