Description
I have tried to create a less roady route from my desktop. I haven't had a chance to walk it yet though. It uses field paths at the Billinge end and a cycle track and urban meadows at the Wigan end. There is house building work going on at the Wigan end, but the route there appears to be valid for bicycles on Google Maps

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

01 Feb 2023I created BilWig Three as I walked this route. There were a couple of problems that needed tweaking, plus a few small improvements.
Crossing Winstanley Road/Ashton Road just south of the M6 could have been a bit dangerous as the footpath emerges onto the inside of a bend on a road where the traffic is quite fast. A local advised me to use the other side of the small Crows Nest Business Park. This appears to be well used, via a gap in the hedge. I guess the official footpath might be okay if you were walking south. (Picture from Google Maps shows where the footpath comes out.) There is a narrow pavement on the north side of the road but nothing on the south side.
My suggested route between Parson’s Meadow and Wigan Pier is currently a fenced off building site, and needed another tweak.
Use WilWig Three instead.
