Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

31 Dec 2024Walked in reverse whilst checking the alternative route. It's a good route, but the Haydock end does spoil it a little.
From Haydock library (a few shops, bus stops) it's a long and uninteresting road walk until we hit the edge of town, where we head up a residential road and, past a barrier, join a nice little wooded footpath. This ends at a roundabout, where we access a closed road (past another barrier and pinch gap). It runs through some quiet woods, where you'll probably only share the space with dog walkers and cyclists.
At its end, past some more barriers, we enter Sankey Valley Park. It's a lovely walk through a lush wooded area on tarmac paths, which also has some interesting industrial remains. Eventually, we pass under road and rail bridges and head uphill past the overflow of Carr Mill Dam.
For some reason, we leave the lakeside walk and exit onto the road past the motel. Again, it's an uninteresting road walk when there's a nice wooded lakeside path just to our right. Eventually, we do join it, just as it leaves the woods, and the narrow path runs alongside the lake on sometimes wet and muddy paths. Past the 19 Arch Bridge, at the end of the path we join a tarmac track which becomes the road into the centre of Billinge, and the end of the route.
The wooded country bits are fantastic it's just the road sections that let it down. Still, it's a decent route.
