26 Aug 2023 (edited 14 Sep 2023)Berinsfield to Wallingford 1 (Berwal 1) review.
An enjoyable walk from Berinsfield, via Dorchester; to then follow the Thames Path National Trail between Shillingford and Wallingford.
The leafy footpath from Berinsfield (Photo 1) ends at the A4074. The crossing point for the Slow Way is tricky to see from the path. There is an earlier crossing option [SU575952] or continue along the path for a safer crossing by bridge [SU581948] (Photo 2).
There is an early break point at Dorchester. The town has been a settlement since the Neolithic, and the many historic sites are well worth exploring.
The route from Dorchester recrosses the A4074 via an underpass, and then takes a footpath into Shillingford. The Slow Way joins the Thames Path at Shillingford Bridge.
The Benson Weir footbridge is closed for repair work (as of 2023), replaced by a ferry crossing. Alternatively, there is a road route into Wallingford.

04 Feb 2023This is a great route and I would use it again.
Please be aware this route forms a normal part of local flood control so check the status of the river during wetter months.
On this occasion I was seamlessly directed around a flooded area by clear yellow signage with good maps so I count this as a successful slowway.
The footpath that crosses the A4074 as you pass between Berinsfield and Dorchester is hard to spot but the map is accurate, a spot of GPS is handy at that point, there is a footpath sign it is just hidden by the trees. The road crossing near Shillingford is also dangerous but there is a short detour to a crossing if needed.
Please do not be put off by these observations - it is a stunning riverside route connecting some great places.

17 Jan 2022This route provides a nice mix of Thames path and Oxfordshire fields. It's relatively flat, but prone to muddiness, so I don't recommend it for anything wheeled. The village of Dorchester is probably the most interesting spot en route, featuring a medieval abbey that's now the parish church, and the Hurst Water Meadow, as well as several pubs.
The route crosses the A4074 three times. Between Berinsfield and Dorchester, and between Warborough and Shillingford, you walk across the road; between Overy and Warborough, there's an underpass.
If you're planning to walk this route and finish with refreshments, then I recommend starting at Berinsfield, because Wallingford has a range of options, while Berinsfield has next to nothing.
