Description

This route leaves Dinas Powys the same way as Bardin1 but then follows a quiet road towards Biglis Cottage, away from the main road (much more peaceful). Then there's an unpaved track that goes under the railway line to Biglis Farm. Just past the farm, I tried the footpath leading left across the field towards the school, but it was fairly overgrown and looked totally impassable from the other (Barry) end. Instead, it's best to use the farm access lane. There's a subway under the A4231 linking the school with Barry.
My only concern is a small section of track by the railway line which was nearly submerged in water on a non-muddy day - it may be a bigger problem in wetter periods

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

April 2023. Direction: Dinas Powis to Barry,

I walked this route after a spell of prolonged rain and it was very muddy in places, but walkable. The worst place was just after the railway tunnel by Biglis Farm. Otherwise, it was a lovely walk through fields, lots of them waterlogged, but the path through was mostly fine. Probably better after a dry spell. The walk is only spoiled by the walk along the very busy and noisy main roads into Barry dock.

I walked this with Hannah and agree with everything she's said.

This is a very mixed route. I'd give some sections four stars and other bits just two. Other than about 30 metres that was overgrown (but passable when we walked it), it's a functional route. It's mostly let down by about 2km of walking on a path beside a busy road (Ffordd y Mileniwm).

The route line is not accurate along Barry Road coming into Dinas Powys. Just stick to the footpath.

Otherwise it's a blend of waterside and suburban walking, with a charming rural hike parallel to Cold Brook.

I reckon someone could create another route that goes through Barry that avoids busy roads and might even be a bit shorter.

I'd walk this route again though.

Starts well along the side of Dock Number 1, but then the next bit of this route is on pavement right by the fast and loud Ffordd Mileniwm, which feels really wearing after a while, although the pavement is wide and safe and recently built (at the Millennium, I guess!). We agreed if we were going to do it again we'd try an early detour across the railway line and up to Dock View Road, which is very close but really high up, and likely has good views all the way across the Bristol Channel. I'd be tempted then to stay off the Millennium Way and find a route through the Cadoxton residential area that would come out by the Richard Gwyn High School, where the path currently goes.
That off-road bit was great.
For the last bit, back on Barry Road, I tried sneaking round the back (the paths along the stream by Wellwood Drive and St Cadoc's Ave) to get away from the car noise, which worked well but put a few more minutes on the walk because you have to overshoot and double back. A nice little series of snickets though, behind back gardens and a bit through an amazing carpet of strange umbrella plants that I can't name!.

Nice walk from Dinas Powys over fields which can be quite muddy in wet conditions. There's a bit in the middle of this walk which must be the least attractive part of the Wales coast path as it is not on the coast and next to a busy road, so it's a bit of a slog. It picks up again towards the end when you get near the sea.

This is a flat, fairly easy route with a few stiles. Some sections could be very muddy/waterlogged after rain or when the ground is saturated.
