19 Jun 2024There is a slightly more interesting start of the route opposite The Woolpack pub in Banstead where you can get off the bus and walk a short distance to where the Winkworth Rod meets the Croydon Lane at a roundabout. Cross the zebra crossing and walk down the alley way between the houses. This is now a well maintained track which leads to Banstead Downs following The London Loop. Once on the Downs there are many clearly marked routes across towards Belmont and the California pub. In the large open spaces, numbers of marbled white butterflies can be seen at this time of year. Today was a beautifully hot day and a very pleasant walk but once past Belmont Station there is no alternative if you want to reach Sutton other than to walk along the main road , a relatively uninteresting route on the pavement.

12 Mar 2023I walked this from Banstead to Sutton, on a bright but cloudy afternoon. There was a little rain in the previous week.
A route of two halves really. The Banstead section (minus the first kilometre) follows Banstead Downs/Banstead Common. Some lovely woods with a few muddy paths. But easy enough going. From Belmont onwards, it is one straight route along a busy road into Sutton. It is very direct, but not overly pleasant as the road is fairly busy. The pavements are wide though, and for a reasonable amount there is a path set away from the road on the western side.

07 Mar 2022A direct, safe and enjoyable route comprising of a muddy, wooded, offroad section over Banstead Common in Surrey then the pavements of Greater London into Sutton. Generally easy to follow but marred by some dodgy plotting at the Banstead end, not bad enough to fail it, but bad enough to have to guess what they had intended. The Sutton end has links to transport and pubs. A good blend of road and offroad.

01 Dec 2021Two thirds pavement and one third earth paths across Banstead Downs. Path may be muddy in wet weather but suitable for pushchairs. No steps or steep slopes.
