19 Jun 2025I walked from Banchory to Peterculter on my penultimate day of The Great Outdoor Challenge.
Starting early, I had bought breakfast which I ate on one of the benches by the Banchory wall (photo 1). Once again the Deeside Way (DW) is clearly signposted (photo 2) and so I entered King George V Park to follow the path. (photo 3). I quickly walked out of the Park as the path followed the River Dee at this point (photo 4). I came upon two bridges side-by-side (photo 5) and at this point the DW became recogniseable as a disused railway line. Railway buildings (photo 6) and maintenance yards appeared at regular intervals, some in better condition than others.
At Craithes I passed a café and public toilets. From here I walked besides fields and lost sight of the river (photo 7). I walked to Drumoak and a sharp right turn (still on the DW) led me under a shady lane which opened onto park land, busy with dog walkers, where I sat on a bench and had lunch.
After lunch I continued on my way past fields (photo 8) until I got to Peterculter. There are only two B&B’s in Peterculter, so if not available it would be a good idea to continue walking to Cults where there is more accommodation.
I have given this five stars as it is a lovely lowland route.
