Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

It would be a better route if it spent more time in Tooting Bec Common rather than going along busy roads.

Not a bad route. I enjoyed the walk across Tooting Bec Common. Other than that, it's mainly along reasonably quiet roads. There is an access problem with a small part of the route. It tries to direct you along a cul-de-sac and through the grounds of Balham Leisure Centre. The problem with that is there's a metal fence in the way! In order to follow the route, after turning off Ravenstone Street towards Larch Close, continue along Larch Close to the end and turn right onto Bedford Hill and then right again onto Elmfield Road. Continue along this road until you reach Cloudesdale Road and turn left. You are now back on the route.

Once out of Streatham. The route follows cut through roads and remains busy through residential streets. But once you get to Tooting Common it is a pleasant walk across a large green open space. Emphasising the few green spaces in South London. Rather than turning left onto Bedford Hill, a more pleasant route is to walk straight on and stay on the common until the railway bridge. Go under and turn left to walk up to Balham Station.

For an urban walk this is a pleasant route, particularly the stretch over Tooting Bec Common, although the section up to there is very busy. It is on pavements and paths throughout, although there were some short muddy sections in the Park, and i'm not sure whether there was hard surface underneath. Near the end, there is a way through Balham Leisure Centre, although this is not very obvious; take the narrow passageway on the left of the building, past the children's playground. This might not be wide enough for a pram or a wheelchair. To avoid this, stay on the road past the leisure centre entrance, and turn right at the end: it will be no further, although busier.
