Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

I walked this route from Stone to Baldwin's Gate. I wanted to like this route, and I was so close to being able to approve it. Long story short: the route is probably a three star route (perfectly adequte, if not mind-blowingly amazing), but a short stretch of completely impassable footpath means I can't necessarily recommend this route. I did successfully follow the line on the map between Stone and Baldwin's Gate, but it wasn't easy.

Leaving Stone, the first bit along the canal is quite lovely and easy. The bit along the A road is surprisingly ok; first there's a pavement, and then there's a nice grassy verge that's quite wide. I walked on a Sunday morning so it was quiet for me.

I was pleased with the walk into Swynnerton, and Swynnerton itself was surprisingly lovely. The walk betwen the A road and Swynnerton however is where we had the first inklings of fields and footpaths and gates not quite aligning with what was mapped. I was able to get through, but it wasn't always clear.

All was well for a long stretch of quiet lane walking until just north of Chapel Chorlton.

This is where I had serious trouble.

The turn-off was really hard to find amid the entrance to a farm, and then there was a short stretch that was followable, and then about 100m or so that was totally overgrown and impassable. No footpath in sight. It's possible I took a wrong turn, so I'm not entirely discounting the possibility that this route could work, and all of it was fine and manageable until this point.

At the four-way path junction just south of the A51, the foothpath returns and it's no problem walking into Baldwin's Gate.

If it weren't for that short section, I'd give this route three stars. For now, I can't recommend it.

    Hi,
Spotted your review when I was looking at some areas I used to enjoy walking when I lived in Stoke-on-Trent.
You comments about navigating the fields around Swynnerton definitely fits with my memory of walking in that area and I once got hopelessly lost near Baldwin's Gate when the path by the railway was diverted.
Taking on board your comments about access, I have added an alternative which will hopefully work slightly better.
