Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

  1. Complete the survey training.

The most important comment to make is that an early part of the route marked here (from the edge of Bacup town to the moorland at Reaps Moss) is NOT a public footpath and cannot be accessed (the track to Tong Farm, near the school, where the contour is marked 334 on the map, has a private property sign and leads to a quarry). So I took another route which is marked on the OS map as a public footpath but that was blocked by fences and I had to again divert my route.
The route as far as the wind turbines at Reaps Moss really isn't pleasant, it's a heavily damaged landscape. But after that is lovely, which is why I still gave it 3 stars. I've walked a lot on the moors around Gorpley Reservoir before but this was mostly a new route for me and I really enjoyed it. Once you pass the turbines the route is easy to follow and the views are lovely.
